Xinyi begins peak Sanhua plum harvest with strong demand

Xinyi, located in Maoming, Guangdong Province, China, has entered its peak Sanhua plum harvest season. Recognized as China’s largest production area for the fruit, the city, particularly Qianpai Town, is recording daily sales of around 200 tons, driven by strong demand across both online and offline markets.

Sanhua plums are noted for their distinct flavor and seasonal variety, attracting attention from domestic and international buyers. Local farmers are actively harvesting and sorting early-ripening varieties. The harvest typically spans around 80 days and offers three flavor stages: crisp and tangy in April, juicy and sweet-sour from May to June, and soft and sweet by July.

Prices vary depending on plum size, ranging from approximately 10 to 32 RMB per kilogram—or about $1.38 to $4.40 USD. At local collection points, workers are sorting and packaging the freshly picked fruit for distribution.

Xinyi has built a successful model combining agriculture with rural tourism. In spring, the bloom of 102,000 mu (approximately 6,800 hectares) of plum trees creates a “sea of snow” effect, drawing large numbers of tourists. During summer, orchards open to visitors for hands-on plum-picking experiences. These tourism activities increase the value of agricultural products and contribute to the local economy.

With a total plum cultivation area of around 350,000 mu (about 23,300 hectares) and an output exceeding 300,000 tons, Xinyi demonstrates an integrated approach to rural economic development. By blending production, processing, and tourism, the city offers a replicable model for rural revitalization.
