There is a shortage of Greek Kakis is not high. “The selling of Greek Kakis is contingent on the demands that is expressed by Jordan who is the most significant purchaser. This season however, there’s no contact or mail from Jordan to date. The reason could be the ongoing war that is taking place in Middle East. Middle East,” says Mr. Nerantzis Xalkidis, owner of the Greek grower and packing firm Agroktimata Pellas. “At the at the same time, there’s certain exports towards Germany, Poland, and Albania however, not a lot of.”
The situation has an impact on prices. “At time of writing prices for the grower of Jiro is 0.20 to 0.40 euros per kilogram, whereas at the start of the season Jiro was sold as 0.40-0.45 euros. At present, Rojo Brillante costs can go upwards of 0.75 euros per kilogram,” states the Greek entrepreneurs.
Despite the unfavorable direction of the season massive destruction to Valencian Kakis due to recent floods might affect market flow for the fruit. “I am expecting a number of phone calls to Spain to Greece seeking kakis over the next few days,” emphasizes Mr. Xalkidis. He says: “The Spaniards will try to get our fruits. They will be focusing on Rojo Brillante. Anyone who has Rojo Brillante is going to be in the Pay dirt.”
In the present situation regarding the kaki fields harvesting will end during the final week of November. This will result in lower yields due to the dry summer. In the words of the Mr. Xalkidis: “Only some fruits remain on mountains’ farms. We have lower-quality fruits than the previous year. A majority of the fruits fall between 18 to 22. Very few fruit are in between sizes 12-16.”
The amount of Rojo Brillante is, despite being lower than Jiro but is increasing. Its owner Mr. Xalkidis states: “In the past, kakis was a plant for growers who were not professional as they were a low-cost and easy to cultivate. But, over the last few years there has been a rise in farmers growing kakis and paying attention to Rojo Brillante due to it being more lucrative, particularly when in comparison to other fruit like peaches or apples.”
However, Rojo Brillante also requires deastringency treatment. In Greece as per Mr. the Xalkidis family, although the majority of merchants and growers possess deastringency rooms, the process occurs primarily within banana ripening chambers.
