For the 3rd quarter of the year 2024, Western Visayas marked coconut as its primary crop, and achieved the production of 136,549 tons according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Region 6. The figure is the equivalent of a 3.9 percent decrease over last year’s 142,057 tons. The sugarcane industry saw a dramatic decrease of 92.2 percentage, with total of 94,195 tonnes mostly coming from Negros Occidental, contributing nearly all of the region’s production.
However, some crops showed an increase in production during the exact same period. Cassava’s output grew marginally by 0.1 percent to 7,933 tons. Production of eggplant and pineapple grew by 2.2 percentage and 21.3 percentage, respectively the production of eggplant reaching 4,267 tons. Production of bananas was the most significant in the sector, with 56,757 tonnes and notable contributions came to Negros Occidental and Iloilo.
Negros Occidental emerged as a major actor in the field of vegetable and root production, especially in the cassava and sweet potato and has a large share in the total volume of production. But, certain crops such as mango and calamansi saw minor declines in their volume of production. This data also revealed the importance of provinces like Aklan and Iloilo with regard to non-food crops, including cacao and abaca as well, which highlights the diversity of agriculture and its challenges in the region.
