The farmers of Vietnam have experienced unprecedentedly price increases for Monthong durian The grade A pricing of VND218,000-230,000 for a kilogram. The price for grades B and C is VND195,000-200,000 and VND100,000-140,000 in the respective categories. In addition, Ri 6 durian prices are steady at VND160,000 in grade A and VND70,000 grade C.
A farmer in Ben Tre Province reported selling an entire ton of grade-C Monthong durian at a price of VND110,000 for a kilogram and also mentioned that he has two additional tonnes to pick. A merchant from Tien Giang Province highlighted a lower capacity for procurement, of 30-40 tonnes last year and 5-15 ton this season.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development blames the shortage on saltwater intrusions in the Mekong Delta that is affecting durian cultivation. Dang Phuc Nguyen of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association expects to see a rebound in production by the end of May and resulting in pricing stabilization.
