Ukrainian onion prices rise due to the high demand and the shortages

In the last week Ukrainian farmer have successful in raising the wholesale price of onions according to EastFruit analysts. Important to know that demand in this sector remains very large. The majority of farms, however, are already finished with harvesting activities and this has resulted in an abrupt decrease in the production of the field-grown crop.

At present, prices of onions on Ukrainian farms vary from 10 to 15 UAH/kg ($0.24-0.36/kg) according to the quality of the onion and also on the amount of the vegetable varieties offered. Prices are currently, in average about 16% more than they were at the close of the week. In addition, the availability of top-quality onions on the market is extremely scarce, since numerous farms are still avoiding from selling their products.

The current harvest season is characterized by Ukrainian farmers are reporting a higher amount of under-quality produce on the onion section because of the harsh conditions in the summer. As a result, some farms experienced numerous bacterial infections because of the higher temperatures during the harvest. However the trading firms that purchase onions for storage are facing significant problems in getting the required batches of quality goods.

It’s worth mentioning that currently prices for onions in Ukraine have already been in the average 33% higher than they were during the same time the previous year. Additionally, many major farms plan to increase prices on quality goods when current sales levels remain at current levels.
