Defra Secretary Steve Reed introduced measures at the NFU Conference to address challenges facing British agricultural. However, there are still concerns for farmers about profitability as well as security of the policy.
It is reported that the Seasonal Worker visa program was extended by five years. It provides temporary help to growers who are facing labor shortages. But, industry voices raise the ongoing issues with visa quotas as well as the lack of long-term solutions for workforce. Even though the government is promising regular reviews of the visa numbers, concerns concerning possible cuts remain.
The announcement of an investment in the amount of PS110 million to agricultural technology and innovations was announced. Grants are made available to purchase equipment such as electronic weeders. Reed said, “We are investing in the UK Agri-Technology industry along with another PS110 million in farm grant announcements this morning.” Reed emphasized the potential of the program to increase profitability and sustainable across all farms. ADOPT’s ADOPT program will support studies that demonstrate the financial benefits of the latest technology. However, many farmers are unsure whether innovation funds are sufficient to address the rising cost and shrinking margins.
The food procurement strategy of the government targets at least 50 percent of the food expenditure to benefit British producers or vendors that meet strict requirements. But, there is still doubt about the enforcement of this policy and its real benefits to UK producers in light of the past problems concerning imports.
The PS200 millions National Biosecurity Centre is planned to improve protection against animal and plant illnesses. Although it is viewed as a step forward farming communities have long pushed to improve disease control as well as more rapid response to outbreaks.
Reed acknowledged the sector’s discontent, saying: “The underlying problem is that the farmers aren’t making enough to cover the cost of their sacrifice and effort they invest.” Even after a few assurances, there are doubts on the efficacy of the policies to address immediate challenges in the sector.
