Uganda’s Banana Initiative targets 14 tons of daily output, with a proposed 50 billion in budget

The Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development (PIBID) in Uganda is now in its 10th year working in the subsector of bananas, with a focus on value-added and the empowerment of farmers. the Director General for PIBID Dr. Florence Muranga, highlighted the progress of the organisation towards changing the industry through new approaches.

The budgeting process was moving along the budgeting process progressed, it was revealed that Dr. Muranga expressed optimism regarding the growth in capacity of the dry banana plant. Current output is 1.4 tons per day with a goal of ambitious for the increase up to 10-14 tons daily, based on the distribution of funds during the coming fiscal year. “We plan to increase the amount of production we can produce up to 14 tons in the coming year, with help from our budget proposal of 50 billion. Now that the budget process begins We believe that the Executive will assist us in this regard,” said Professor. Muranga.

The program, which is celebrating 20 years of impacting the sector of bananas as well as boosting the economy, has its own issues due to inadequate funds. Management has made pleas to the government to increment in funding by recommending a budget that is in the region of 50 billion USD for the fiscal year to come in order to achieve its goals.

With the help from Ishara Industrial Technology Park, PIBID is aiming to boost the capacity of its production. The move will increase the export potential from Uganda’s industry of bananas as well as facilitate the substitution of imports, which will contribute to Uganda’s economic growth.
