Two weeks of harvest for Moroccan blueberries

The Moroccan blueberry harvest is getting off to a surprisingly slow start against an environment of intense competitors, as other countries supply the world market in huge quantities. It’s too early to have an accurate picture of the way that this season is shaping in the coming weeks, but signs indicate that it is giving Moroccan exporters hope as per Larach-based grower as well as exporter Zouhir Daissoria.

Zouhir tells us, “We’re currently in the second week of harvesting in the Larache region. The weather is excellent, and the hot temperatures suggest a good yield. The majority of growers in the area are in their very first or their second harvest which is revealing big and good-quality fruit. However, it’s too difficult to say if there’s any clear feedback from cultivators on the how good their fruit is.”

The current exports from Morocco vary from around 80- 100 tonnes every week. This is an adequate amount, but not at the level of maximum. Zouhir states, “Packing stations exporting under contract are not yet able to begin their programmes, and peak harvests can be anticipated beginning in February through April.”

There is a shortage of demand in the market for Moroccan blueberries, according to Zouhir. Zouhir says “There are plenty of blueberries in the market that are from Chile, Peru, and Spain. European buyers aren’t yet turning all of their attention to Morocco and the prices are less than they were at the beginning of last season. The prices are likely to rise in February and beyond. Yields for Latin America are beginning to expire, but Spain is not at the peak. Therefore, we’ll be in a favorable market position before February.”

As of now, Moroccan exporters are turning to markets other than the Gulf States, like Asia as well as in the Gulf States, and Russia. “These markets are currently experiencing decent need for Moroccan blueberries. This demand is growing as the seasons progress. Here at FirstGreenLand we’re exporting our blueberries this year first time to Hong Kong, and prospects are positive for the development of the market and possibly the other Asian markets. This market could prove to be important for us, especially during this time of year.”

As the blueberry market has seen a rise in competition, and emerging sources that can supply massive quantities, Morocco stands out for the proximity of its geography to Europe as per the producer. “There is certainly plenty of blueberries that drive the prices lower. We can however provide our customers with greater satisfaction as well as better price for their price. We will ensure that our customers make good profits while purchasing larger and better-quality items in comparison to other sources that have less mileage for delivery and more quality and freshness.”

“For the most part, our clients are interested in diversifying their supply of blueberries while keeping some of their sources of the source being Morocco and that’s their assurance for consistency and high quality.” states the exporter.
