Turkish hazelnut production is forecast to be high in 2023 to be 717,931 tons

In Turkey 500 000 households directly and indirectly earn an income from the production of hazelnuts over 725,000 acres in 16 provinces. Within the Black Sea Region, which is the most important resource for the country’s hazelnut production Ordu is at the top of the list of the largest quantity of production, having an orchard that covers around 230,000 acres.

The return on the item in question amounts to around 2.5 billion dollars, according to Cengiz Bostanci, of the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry: “Our target in hazelnuts is 5 billion dollars. It’s easy to get this amount by increasing the yield of the production zones. The increase in yield can be achieved through the latest production methods. Hazelnuts grown in Turkey are among the finest hazelnuts that are available in the world. Hazelnuts grown in Turkey are utilized in various areas across the globe including the chocolate industry, and that is yet another indication of the high quality of Turkish hazelnuts. 75 percent of global hazelnut production goes out by Turkey and we export up to 85 percent of the hazelnuts that we make.”

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry established the production estimate for hazelnuts 2023 at 717,931 tonnes and it is the International Council of Nut Fruits (INC) exporters estimates 810 million tonnes Bastonaci states. “There there is a gap between 100 000 tonnes in the estimates. The commission for yield estimation was made up of eleven different organizations in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.”

“Hazelnut exporters sold 1.6 billion dollars worth of hazelnuts over the 10-month time frame during the 2022-2023 season which resulted in the sale of 262,173 tonnes. Exports went to 119 countries over ten months. Germany, Italy and France are the three most popular countries from which Turkey exported its largest amount. We share our expertise on hazelnut farming to hazelnut producers from countries like Azerbaijan, Georgia, Italy and USA particularly to Turkish farmers in accordance to their requirements. We also have contact with hazelnut engineers in these nations,” Bostanci says.
