A mandarin type that is both red on the inside and exterior is close to the completion of the testing and development stage, and is expected to have the ability to launch a commercial campaign.
Ciqua Levante is known as the breeder of unique varieties like the SilkRoad lemon as well as the CQN42 orange. It is one of the earliest Navelina. “A several many years back, we launched with the Ruby Project with the aim of creating citrus fruits with intense red colors as well as in the pulp and in the pulp. This was done using traditional breeding methods without transgenesis which ensures their original nature,” says Ruben Garcia who is the CFO for Ciqua Levante.
One of the most impressive successes has been the creation of the mandarin red CQM24 one of the varieties that have the highest amount of anthocyanins, a natural pigment that have antioxidant benefits.

“The CQM24 is a second-season mandarin of a decent size, which is simple to cut and has an impressive amount of powerful red juice. Also, it stands out due to its flavor. It has 12 levels of Brix as well as a light and balanced acidity that is very pleasing in the mouth,” says Ruben Garcia. “Its the red hue, on the skin and inside the pulp could make it a different variety that is available in supermarkets.”

For the mandarin to develop the red hue the fruit requires colder evenings and moderate temperatures throughout the daytime. Based on Ruben Garcia Red mandarin’s harvest dates will allow the fruit to be sold in the middle of February. It will also coincide to Valentine’s Day celebrations.
CQM24 is at an extremely advanced stage of development and testing. “We think that CQM24 has tremendous commercial value and can have a major impact on the market for premium citrus. Its attractive design, healthy characteristics, and distinctiveness are ideal to a buyer who are looking for products with beneficial benefits for their use,” says Ruben Garcia. “It can also meet the rising demand for fruit that is healthy and has attractive hues, which are growing in importance.”

Within the context of the Rubi Project, the firm that specializes in breeding citrus fruits has developed a variety that is sweet, red grapefruit that has anthocyanins. It is distinguished by its higher juice percentage and absence of furanocoumarins – which is a chemical that must be avoided while taking specific medicines, like the ones that treat hypertension and cancer. “We are also working to get red lemons as well as oranges in the hope to continue expanding the selection of different citrus fruits that have significant added value” is the statement of CEO Ciqua Levante.
