Thermo King(r) Thermo King, an important player in the field of transport products for temperature control and an affiliate associated with Cold Chain Federation member Trane Technologies Thermo King has announced it has announced that DP World logistic group and the food retail chain Woolworths were the first two companies in Africa to utilize using the Thermo King AxlePower energy recuperation technology on the roads. Dedicated to promoting sustainability in the African transport industry The innovative Thermo King refrigerated trailer has begun operations for Woolworth’s route that runs between Johannesburg as well as Cape Town.
AxlePower has proven its worth. AxlePower system has proven its durability by working well in the most extreme of temperatures, allowing for continuous cooling and uninterrupted circulation of air inside the trailer at conditions with temperatures of more than 40 degrees. In the 15,000 miles traveled to date the system is operating using electricity, and without using the engine’s diesel and for over ninety percent of the duration. It also did not require connections to the grid either in order to make up for any shortage of power or to even the battery’s charge. The estimates suggest that the AxlePower could annually cut down about 27 tonnes of CO2 when compared with traditional electric-powered trailer refrigeration.
“This project is a significant moment in the direction of a more long-term sustainable future for Africa’s transportation and logistics sector”said Ronnie Meechan, regional director Middle East and Africa at Thermo King. “In the fast-growing South African market, the use of hydrogen and electrification technologies is becoming more prominent for transporters seeking to cut down on use of fuel. Our association with Woolworths as well as DP World underscores the shared conviction that, by taking advantage of technology advancements and innovative solutions that we will make huge steps towards lessening environmental impacts and ensuring a more sustainable future.”
“As an element of our dedication towards sustainability, we’re delighted to bring ThermoKing AxlePower technology in our fleet of vehicles,” stated Feroz Koor. Woolworths Holdings Group Head of Sustainability. “Following the introduction of our online delivery vehicles in the last year, this project is in line to our Vision 2025+ goal to be carbon-free in 2040, and our goal to build a more efficient and sustainable supply chain and reduce the carbon footprint we leave behind.”
