Exporters of Polish apples haven’t experienced any activity in recent times, since prices appear to be putting an end to the appetite, says Aniruddh Ramesh, director of Polish exporter LVMG Grupa “The price of apples currently at an all-time high in Poland has brought the export market to a complete stop. We’re wrapping up our export of the Royal Gala variety as the remaining bins in our CA’s need processing, and in the next couple of weeks we’ll be done. Prices in our Red Delicious variety reached a extremely high level and then proved to not be sufficient to compete with India because the buyers can source their supplies from other countries for the same price. This is why we ceased packing the sort of product a couple of months back. In the next week, we’ll hopefully launch the export of Red Jonaprince on a larger size, if the prices correspond with those of our buyers.”
The shipping industry is considering whether they should invest in logistics in India, Ramesh feels a direct connection to Europe and India is the most advantageous for trade. “I’m aware that several large shipping firms have plans for investment in India to help boost trade. We, at least in the sense of shipping, our top priority is the time to transit. We prefer services that have the shortest transit time due to the sensitive nature of our merchandise. Therefore, if we can manage to get a direct route between Europe to India that could be a huge increase in trade.”
LVMG remains stocked with plenty of apples on hand, but the quantity of apples available is significantly lower than in previous years: “Apple stocks are depleting rapidly because of the lower quantities available as well as the high demand in market demand from the EU market. But, we possess a selection of varieties we plan to sell towards the end of the season. However, they are in a smaller quantities than in the prior seasons. The prices after Christmas went up with a rapid pace which definitely slowed the sales. It’s still my opinion that the our stocks are adequate to ship exports, however I’m we aren’t sure of the demand and supply because of the price we’re witnessing,” Ramesh concludes.
