The Ministry of Agriculture in Iran reports a rise of 10,000 tons in the production of pomegranates in the year that is currently in the Iranian calendar year. Zahra Jalili Moghaddam, who oversees the semi-tropical and tropical fruits and pomegranates, noted that Iran’s fruit orchards are spread across 96,000 hectares and yield around 1,340,000 tonnes. The increase in production is consistent with the broader achievements of Iran’s horticulture and is a major contributor to the half of the country’s total exports of agricultural products, which amount around $3.0 billion.
Mohammad-Mehdi Boroumandi, Deputy Agriculture Minister for Horticulture Affairs has revealed the exports of Iran’s horticulture to more than 100 countries and total almost three million tons. The country’s landscape for horticulture spans three million acres, and is responsible for about 26 million tons of different products each year. Although the country is self-sufficient in many fruit, Iran still imports bananas or pineapple, coconut as well as mango because of the lack of production in the country.
Iran is proud of its low agricultural inputs of chemicals and pesticide use is significantly less than that of the world standard. Its commitment to sustainability is apparent in the significant amount of fruit and kiwi cultivation specifically the Mazandaran as well as Gilan provinces. This position Iran as a top global producer of kiwis.
