Arrival of Dredger Willem Van Rubroeck in Ndayane this month is the first step in the commencement of the maritime work for the $1.2 billion Port of Ndayane which is a plan to turn Senegal into a key international trade hub.
The vessel will be able to dredge the 5km-long shipping channel, crucial to the construction of this modern high-capacity port, that will help improve Senegal’s trade infrastructure. Phase one of the construction comprises an 840m quay as well as five kilometers of channel that are which can hold one of the biggest container ships in the world. In this stage, construction will allow it to accommodate 1.2 million TEUs each year. Phase 2 will include another 410m quay placing Ndayane as the leading logistic center within West Africa.
It is the Port of Ndayane is a continuation of the success of DP World at the Port of Dakar that has expanded from handling 300,000 TEUs 2008, and to handle 800,000 in 2023. But, the Dakar port’s geographical location in the city’s dense zone is a barrier to expansion. Ndayane therefore becomes the ideal option to help support Senegal’s economic and trade development goals.
After a recent conversation with Senegalese President Ousmane Sonko DP World Group Chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem emphasized the long-term dedication of the company towards Senegal: “We believe in the potential of Senegal’s economy and agree with the ambitions of the government to Senegal’s future.. The port of Ndayane is expected to increase the status of Senegal and affect trade on Africa. African continent. We’re happy with our accomplishments at our work at the Port of Dakar and Ndayane is the next step in positioning Senegal as a leading regional trade center. The plans we have in mind extend past the ports. We are planning to create an economic zone close to the port as well as Blaise Diagne International Airport, that is anticipated to generate additional jobs as the port.”
DP World is collaborating with British International Investment (BII), which is the UK’s development financing agency, in delivering the project. BII says the port can boost the GDP of Senegal by 3 percent by boosting trade flows which could add $15 billion to export value until 2035. The project could create 1,800 jobs. Once it is completed, the port is anticipated to provide 2.3 million employment opportunities across Senegal and 22,000 of them linked directly to increased trade.
The Port of Ndayane can make Senegal into the regional leader in trade opening up new possibilities in terms of employment, growth as well as global connectivity.
