The new variety of apple was designed by Himachal researchers

Researchers at Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, created an indigenous type of apple which will produce a the crop in two months earlier than regular varieties. This apple doesn’t need lots of sunshine to get its dark red color. The University has been studying this new variety for the past four years. The fruit was chosen from the old 35-year-old Vance Delicious variety. When compared with the original variety, this fruits turn dark red 2 months before.

Presently, the apples that are grown in Himachal Pradesh require 90 to 120 days before they are ready for flowering. This cultivar is well-adapted to the temperate climate and be able to withstand any environmental changes.

The yield of this year’s apples was significantly lower than last year’s and raises questions over reasons behind this decrease. The unusually hot winter as well as the sudden rainfall patterns slowed the production of apples this year. It was not possible to finish the chilling time because of the absence of snowfall during winter, particularly in lower elevation areas.
