The impact of restrictions to water use on potato production South Africa

FP Coetzee of Potatoes South Africa has highlighted the remarkable price rise in the potato market due to a decrease in the production of potatoes due to load-shedding from 2023. After a reduction of 1,600 ha price, the market jumped up from R42.87/10kg to R72,92/10kg. Another reduction of 2100 ha, which could be triggered in the event of proposed water usage restrictions, will dramatically raise the cost.

The Water and Sanitation Department’s recommendation for a reduction of 30% in the amount of water extracted within the Berg-Olifants area may result in an important decrease in the cultivation of potatoes. The proposal has caused debate, with questions about its economic implications and precision of calculations regarding water supply. There is a risk of higher prices, hardships for the economy, and environmental risks resulting from decreased potato production highlights the need for environmentally sustainable practices for managing water. Potatoes South Africa is a proponent of effective water management practices and education to reduce the risk of negative effects on the industry as well as the community.
