The first closed loop recycling system for FIBCs

Manufacturer and distributor of packaging LC Packaging and plastic recycler Healix created a premium closed loop recycling process to FIBCs. It is the first of its kind in the market. The closed loop consists of the removal of used FIBCs (big bags) in LC Packaging customers’ locations and being processed by Healix the state of the art recycling facility located in Maastricht within the Netherlands for the production of the highest-quality recycled polypropylene (rPP). This rPP is employed to make new FIBCs that contain 30% rPP in the production plant at LC Packaging, Dutch Bangla Pack Ltd.

Achieving a circular and sustainable future

The innovative closed loop technology comes from two and a half years of development and testing. With the help of the two companies LC Packaging and Healix, numerous testing sessions, as well as the creation of a suitable recycle facility best packaging layout and recycling facility was designed to shut the loop.

Marcel Alberts, Founder of Healix: “At Healix we believe we will only be able to solve the “plastic issue” which is ruining our earth by working with world-class industry experts. It is a collective initiative and, thanks to the commitment of LC Packaging to move to the next stage in ending the tide of plastic through creating a circular path with the waste of plastic fiber. Our shared goals are excellent as the material is of tremendous value, and now with the closed loop technology, the value of it is growing more.”

Marcel Schouten, Director FIBC Marcel Schouten, Director FIBC LC Packaging: “This is major step towards the use of premium transport packaging in a green method. In LC Packaging, we have made it our target of having at least 50% recycled materials used in our packaging by 2030. We have Healix as our business partner, we think we’re on the path to making this goal a reality. It’s only the beginning but have the future as bright for our company. We have recently launched the LC Carbon Footprint Calculator which can estimate the carbon footprint for a client’s FIBC extremely precisely. The calculator also highlights the cost reductions that can be made by using recycled materials or reusing. It is amazing that we are able to have a closed loop option?”

Created for Recycling

Closed loop solutions to FIBCs is the first of its kind in the field and is scheduled to be released as the Designed for Recycling (Dfr) Standard shortly. It was created in collaboration with people from EFIBCA as well as Eurojute which are the two FIBC trade associations across Europe and headed by LC Packaging. The Draft DfR Standard is created to facilitate closed loop recycling within the FIBC industry on a greater extent by increasing the recycling capabilities of FIBCs to ensure that FIBCs are able to be reused into innovative packaging that is flexible. Marcel Schoutensays “The greater the number of FIBCs purchased “Designed for Recycling”, the greater number of FIBCs are able to be part of to the loop. We require the support from everyone FIBC users to join the closed loop. We must unite to build an improved world for the next generations to cherish!”
