The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage located in Sri Lanka marked its 50th anniversary in celebration with a feast of fruit to its eighty elephants. They enjoyed pineapples, melons, bananas, and cucumbers. Guests were served traditional sweets and rice milk. The orphanage was established in 1975. orphanage boasts a highly successful breeding program, with the elephants having four generations which range in age from 18 months up until 70. It is a major tourist destination that generates millions of revenues from admission charges. Elephants are fed a lot of food each day and visitors are able to participate during their bathing rituals at the nearby Maha Oya River.
