The Egyptian peanut harvest begins

The Egyptian peanut harvest has only began as demand continues to increase and the competition remaining calm. Mohamed Hassan, export sales manager for Alalamia Nuts reports on the season’s beginning.

“Our season for peanuts began about two weeks ago and will continue for seven months. In this season, we’ve seen an increase in production in the country as a result of a harsh conditions and dropping peanut acres to maize and rice production that are important crop varieties in Egypt. The decrease in acres is approximately 10%” claims Mohamed.

“That is to say, the quality is top-quality,” adds Mohamed. “Peanuts are cultivated in a number of sandy zones within the Egyptian desert. They are grown with pivot irrigation that favors the production. We cultivate the Baladi as well as the American NC variety. This one is designed for export and during this season, its quality is exceptional and production occurred at the optimal temperature.”

Egyptian peanuts are coming into the market during a period of high demand, according to Mohamed. “There is a strong demand coming from Europe particularly Italy, Germany and Belgium. We also receive demands from Gulf countries, but in lesser quantities.”

Although Egypt does not make the top ten list of largest peanut producers in the world However, it has some advantages, according to Mohamed. “There’s intense competition on the market among traditional producers like China, India, the USA, Argentina, and other countries. Egyptian exporters are directly competing from India However, our harvest is two months earlier and Indian sizes of peanuts are less. This means that Indian production is mostly destined to food production, like chocolate bar production and chocolate bars, while Egyptian peanuts are able to serve a wider and diverse clientele.”

“We also enjoy stable prices. Occasionally, even declining due to the decline of the Egyptian pounds. In this season, too, we’re maintaining our prices at a steady level,” says Mohamed.

Mohamed concluding, “At Alalamia Nuts, we’ve been specialized in the production and export of peanuts since 2003. We’ve maintained a steady area of 840 ha during for this year and are able to offer diverse crops of various sizes, varieties and varieties. We would recommend our American NC selection, which is high-quality and readily accessible in 3 varieties (in shell or red skin and blanched) and 5 sizes. They are available in 25, 30 kg or 650 kilogram packages.”
