The Sylhet as well as Moulvibazar haor zones where farmers are using scientific practices to cultivate yield-producing varieties of potatoes, which have significantly impacted their financial conditions. Of the 106 varieties of potatoes that are grown in Bangladesh just 18-21 are considered to be the highest yielding. Habibur Rahman Jalal is an entrepreneur in the field of agriculture who hails from Giasnagar village, Moulvibazar Sadar, has successfully cultivated 21 varieties of potatoes. Jalal’s farm is a varied selection of potatoes, with every kind of potato is marked by a chalkboard.
Thanks to The Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) as well as The Akbarpur Regional Agricultural Research Centre, Jalal expanded his potato production, cultivating a mixture of both old and modern varieties. Even with the first weather problems, Jalal achieved a satisfactory production.
The Agricultural Research Centre provided 18 of the 21 varieties of potatoes Jalal planted, including noteworthy varieties like Bari-25 (Asterix) and Bari-78. Regular maintenance, which included fertilization, was vital to the success of the crop, even though unplanned rain caused certain losses. The new crops far outperformed the local varieties with regards to yield, despite the increased costs for production because of weather-related pest problems.
