The brand new INIA G-4 grape aims to be the leader in varietal changes in Chile

The sector of fruits is constantly facing difficulties in adapting to changing climate and international markets. To address this in response, INIA Agricultural Research Institute (INIA) as well as the Biofruit Consortium are coordinating the genetic improvement program (PMG) that is aimed at table grapes. Its INIA G-4 variety that aims to take the lead in the variety exchange process in Chile and is expected to be registered in the SAG in 2023, was presented during the field day.

It was attended by the newly appointed director for the national office of INIA, Carlos Furche, who talked about the partnership between public and private on this project. “Table grapes have had to endure challenging times and may see a chance of recovery. The reason for this is related to supply of varieties that are adapted to the needs of the market as well as changes in climate,” stated Furche.

Rodrigo Cruzat, general manager of Consorcio Biofrutales said that the industry of fruit has challenges, such as dryness and the need to replace varietals. “We seek out varieties that are able to serve the consumers and satisfy the market like INIA G-4. We think it’s got the attributes needed to replace,” Cruzat said. It is the form of an Open Model, with no restriction on the acreage, or even a small quantity of exporters.

INIA G-4 is an white, seedless, slightly elongated berry. It is simple to manage and can reach export dimensions (21-22 millimeters). It matures during mid-season, and has a high yield with a rate of more than 3,800 boxes/ha.

“This is an extremely efficient variety with an extremely pleasant taste, and a good life after harvest since its grapes remain solid, with a good rachis, with no flaws lasting between 45 and 60 days” said Cecilia Peppi who is the head of PMG INIA-Biofrutales Table Wine. There are currently plantations across different regions of Chile which have been successful.

INIA G-4 is a variety that was submitted to be registered with the SAG in 2023. It is currently under provisional protection. It is anticipated that this variety will become an integral part of the replacement for fruit and commercially available under licence for ANA Chile.
