Director-general of the office, Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, indicated that mango is a major source of income to Thailand due to its unique flavour and its species. Thai mango has been gaining popularity globally, including South Korea emerging as the main export market, then followed by Malaysia.
2024 was the year that Thailand exported fresh mangoes worth around 2.93 billion baht South Korea, marking a 132.7 percentage increase from year to year. The increase is due by the South Korean government’s policy to raise import quotas, and to reduce taxes on tropical fruit in order to reduce cost to consumers as well as address shortages.
Thai mango prices have benefited from South Korea’s decision to abolish the earlier 30 percent import tax. South Korean consumer habits, which include the choice of fresh fruits at mealtimes and the popularity of social media in the form in the form of mango sticky rice are a factor in the positive image regarding Thai mangos.
South Korea is expected to import greater quantities of Thai fruit, such as avocados, mangos, and bananas. Malaysia is still a major source of Thai mangos because of the growing popularity of eating fresh fruits as well as mango shakes. Demand for fresh mangos in Japan is increasing with the rise of healthcare trends as well as dessert processing.
The Commerce Ministry is actively promoting exports of fruit through programs like trade fairs at the border and soft power policies, as well as business matching for fruit. Poonpong said, “Thai fruits are recognized by South Koreans as high-quality premium product. If Thailand is able to maintain the high-quality of its fruits this will boost confidence among consumers, and create potential to increase market share.”
Discussions in talks with South Korea on the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) are going on, with the potential of enhancing Thai exports of fruit.
