Tajikistan is preparing to increase its farming of citrus, the addition of 113 acres of citrus orchards that are being developed in the country’s “Development Program to improve the quality of its horticulture and citrus farming to 2025-2029.” The new orchards will be planted in a variety of areas, including Sughd, Khatlon, the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Regional Region and regions under the jurisdiction of the republic.
The country currently is home to 438 acres of citrus orchards. They are planted in trenches, greenhouses and semi-trenches in order to make the best utilization of the country’s special natural resources. It is among the industries that earn the highest profits.
The method of trench cultivation of citrus fruits invented by Tajik researchers in the 1930s is a key factor in promoting the development of this industry not only in Tajikistan but also across various other Central Asian republics. The most suitable areas for the cultivation of citrus fruits within Tajikistan is those of the Vakhsh as well as the Gissar valleys as well as in the Kulob region, in particular those districts such as Farkhor, Khamadoni, and Muminabad with lengthy and moderately hot summers.
The most significant challenge faced by growing citrus in this region is the vulnerability of the citrus crop to cold temperatures, which requires particular care and consideration.
