The SRTF has announced the completion of their Agriculture Project “Cold Storage Facility for Perishable crops in Aleppo”Phase I” this morning.
This project sought to establish cold storage facilities for vegetables, particularly potatoes. The goal was to reduce losses after harvest for farmers, and to increase their income and improve the accessibility of staple, foods that are perishable in the surrounding communities.
It was accomplished through the renovation of an old building that was converted into a cold storage facility with 10 rooms facility, as well as the supply of consumables and fixed assets, which allowed farmers to keep their harvests and other produce in a top-quality facility. This improves the quality of food accessible in local markets as well as reducing damage to crops as well as enhancing the security of food within the area.
The small-scale farmers and other market participants to improve their relationships with the local market, decreasing the dominance on private storage proprietors in the vicinity.
The budget is around EUR 1.04 millions, the initiative has directly benefitted potato farmers over the past three years. The total number is 3,300 potato farmers are set to profit from the newly renovated and well-equipped cold storage facility.
