Spain remains the top trader in fresh citrus fruit

For the period 2023-2024, Spanish citrus exports outpaced imports by 2,509 million euro, even though yields fell because of adverse weather conditions. Spain is still the top trader in fresh citrus, with 25% of global exports. Exports were 2.34 million tons, i.e. 3.1 percent less than the preceding season, and 17.8 percentage less than average for the previous five years. The value of exports was up. It was at 2,662 million euros. This more than the last season as well as the average over the past five seasons.

The amount of imported goods rose by 0.4 percent over the previous campaign and increased by 17% in comparison with the typical, totalling the 168,130 tonnes. The imports totalled 150 million euros. This is 15percent more than the previous campaign and 31 percent more than average.

However, Spain continues to be the top producer of oranges in Europe and is the sixth largest globally in accordance with the Ministry of Agriculture.

Its production stood at 2.65 million tonnes, i.e. 10.6 percent less than last season and 24.2 percentages less than five-year average. Production of citrus fruits is expected to fall by 15 percent. But records are anticipated for grapefruit and lemon.

Andalusia which is the autonomous region that is the most affected by drought, is expecting 20 percent reduction in production of citrus. The Valencian Community’s production of citrus will decrease by 17 percent, whereas Murcia’s Region of Murcia would increase the amount by 6 percent.

The cost of producers of citrus fluctuated during the course of. The beginning of the year, growers were able to sell their fruit easily, but there was a decrease in sales at the end of 2023.
