Production increase for Ugandan avocados

There are a variety of seasons to enjoy the various avocado varieties that are available in Uganda according to Kamwaka Bogere Amonie, sales director of the fresh produce exporter Damex Uganda Ltd: “The Ugandan Hass avocado season falls in the rainy first season that runs from February until June. It is also in the second season of rain, from July through December. The Fuerte variety usually is in the process of being picked from February. But, lesser quantities can be picked in December or January, contingent upon the location of production. Jumbo is the Jumbo variety is picked throughout all year long.”

According to Amonie The production of avocados within Uganda is growing, due to a variety of aspects. “In Uganda, every season there is an increase in production of avocados as new farmers have been coming in each season. Also, the weather contributes to this rise, because the greater increase in rainfall we observe, the greater production grows as well. The majority of our avocados we ship in countries like the United Kingdom, Germany and Netherlands. Also, we used to ship to the Middle-East mostly in the UAE However, we don’t prefer doing business with this area. There hasn’t been much demand at this point. Perhaps it’s because of the start of the year The main reason for the slow demand are the exporters as well as avocado oil production factories.”

Amonie insists on the laborious, since the quality of fruit varies. the same quality because of inconsistent methods of farming “The Ugandan avocado industry does have a number of issues. There can an issue with quality control that is not up to par, because of inconsistent practices in farming as well as insufficient cold chain logistics, lengthy transit times, absence access to markets and market information about pest and disease problems and a lack of understanding about international guidelines. Additionally, there are logistical challenges as well as high import costs and the competition of regional competitors. However, naturally, interacting with people you trust will help you overcome some of these issues.”

The cost of Ugandan avocados are directly linked to the supply of avocados in other nations. “Our prices are dependent on the lower production from major suppliers like South Africa, Tanzania, Israel, Peru and Mexico. When they are faced with issues for example, droughts, our prices are automatically increased because demand is increasing. In this particular season, it’s difficult to know what’s going to take place, but we’re confronted with an extensive drought.” Amonie concludes.
