Prices for potatoes increase in Dhaka in the harvest time

In Dhaka in the capital city of Bangladesh The prices of potatoes in Bangladesh are rising significantly in the midst of the harvest season. In the last two weeks, there’s seen a Tk 15 to 20 percent increase per kilo. Analysts at the market attribute this increase to the rise in inflation as well as supply chain issues caused by some organizations. In comparison to last year potato prices increased by two-thirds, owing to the poor weather, a rise in seeds and fertilizer costs being mentioned by business as the primary causes for this increase.

At present, potatoes can be purchased at prices of as high as Tk 65 per kilogram, which is a considerable increase over the previous time’s Tk 28-30. According to the Consumers Association of Bangladesh highlights the fact that this increase isn’t due to the issue of supply and demand instead, it is due to market manipulation and the rise in inflation that is exacerbated due to the delay of government response. In spite of an increase in potato cultivating area, a premature harvest as well as adverse weather conditions have contributed to a predicted 30% reduction in production according to the Bangladesh Cold Storage Association. It is anticipated that this will keep prices high all through the whole year. In contrast to the department of Agriculture Extension’s optimistic forecast for production the experts in the industry predict less yields because of unfavorable conditions and the rising cost of seeds as well as fertilizers.
