Prevar has a goal to set the direction for fruit technology in New Zealand to the world

Prevar was founded as a joint venture in 2004 and this year, they will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their firm. It is located within Hawke’s Bay New Zealand, Prevar is controlled by the industry, with investors New Zealand Apples & Pears Incorporated, Plant & Food Research and Apples and Pears Australia Limited.

Prevar was founded to create and market innovative apple and pear varieties to be licensed in New Zealand and around the globe. The purpose of Prevar is to give the opportunity to access new and innovative varieties that will help grow the category and generate price increases.

“We are responsible for providing clear guidance for this New Zealand Plant & Food Research Institute (PFR) to guide the PFR’s apple and pear breeding program for developing new products to meet the markets’ needs of the present and in the future. We monitor and anticipate changes in consumer behavior that go beyond the immediate 20 to 30 year time-frame” is the explanation of Amanda Lyon, Brand Manager.

“We put a large portion of our profits in R&D to ensure that we remain on top of the game with most innovative items. Any time there are a couple of hundred varieties that are in the stages of R&D which we narrow to the absolute most effective making it to full production.”

Over the course of 20 years, Prevar has licensed commercially 18 varieties and entered into 36 licensing agreements and holds over 183 trademark registrations around the world.

“We are proud of the accomplishments we have to be proud about in the first 20 years of company, including the development of distinct IP kinds such to be Dazzle(tm), Rockit(tm), PiqaBoo(r) and Lemonade(tm) together with Sassy(tm), Posh(tm) and Joli(tm) to name a few of the most recent new additions to our range.

“We are extremely excited to mark this 20th birthday. It has been a long time since we made investment over the past 20 years that have allowed us so that we can build an efficient business that can provide higher returns to our farmers as well as continues to assist the industry and delights our clients.”

Prevar invented Prevar developed the PremA96 apple cultivar, which has grown into a huge success under the of Rockit(tm) from Rockit Global Limited, who control the name. It is an amazing story of success where an entrepreneur saw an opportunity to take an apple that was small enough to snack on, and put it into the form of a tube, and create an amazing brand which appeals to the consumers of various parts of the globe.

PiqaBoo(r) is a unique IP version that brings together the finest in Japanese, Chinese and European fruit. The demand and enthusiasm are growing because more and more people discover the pleasures of the pears. The future is exciting ahead for this distinctive fruit. “Amanda believes that within the next 20 years we will witness an era of change in the pear industry and Prevar is excited to be at the front of it with our PIQA(r) Series.”

Red with a vibrant shiny skin Dazzle(tm) apple is in juicy flavor with delightfully sweet, vibrant white flesh, and a refreshing taste similar to watermelon.”

“One of our latest partnership agreements includes T&G Global with a new apple variety that is branded by the name of Joli(tm). We’re really looking forward to the next chapter of this new apple and are looking forward to contributing to this Joli(tm) brand’s worldwide expansion initiatives.”

We’re able to use our intellectual property we’ve created for the production of apples and pears the pears and apples in New Zealand and grow those apple and pears more closely to customers in different global markets making use of new technologies to adapt better to the changing demands of our customers and our ever-changing requirements of farmers,” said Tony Martin who is the chief executive officer of Prevar.

This will allow more growers across the globe to cultivate only the finest of NZ apple and pear.
