The Department of Agriculture (DA) in the Philippines reports that the 2,300 metric tons (MT) of imported red onions, part of a larger importation initiative, have been fully sold. This importation was part of a strategy to reduce the retail price of onions, which had risen to US$ 3.55 per kilo in February.
DA Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa detailed that the importation included 4,000 MT of both red and white onions. However, only 986 MT of the approved 1,000 MT for white onions and 2,300 MT of the expected 3,000 MT for red onions arrived in the country. Currently, only imported white onions continue to compete with local produce.
According to the Bureau of Plant Industry’s report, the imported red onions have already been depleted in the market. De Mesa noted, “That’s how fast the red onions were sold in a few days.”
