The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) seeks to increase storage costs for containerized foreign goods beyond the storage time that is free by 32 percent. The PPA will also bring in an additional 150% charge for reefer container storage. The aim is to ease congestion in ports by encouraging prompt container removals.
The PPA Commercial Services Department has stated that the rates for storage for international containerized cargoes that includes exports, imports and transshipments have remained constant since the year 2014.
The increased rate, PPA said, is designed to maximize yard space utilization and accelerate the removal of containers for import and thereby reducing congestion.
