Peruvian blueberry exports surge despite El Nino challenges

The Peruvian blueberry market, an emerging but thriving sector of the market for agricultural exports has recently faced the first serious challenge of its kind due to the climate-related disturbances caused due to El Nino. The result was an increase in production as well as a delay to the picking season. Despite this however, the business enjoyed an unexpected benefit, as the resulting shortage of blueberries available on the international market increased prices as well as providing financial relief for producers facing difficulties in obtaining market access.

The advancements in genetic research and the tenacity of Peruvian farmers are a key factor in the overcoming of these hurdles and reestablishing Peru’s position as an international leader in the world of exports for blueberries. This is evident in the increasing volume of blueberries being shipped for international markets, with a particular focus in Europe.
