On the 3rd of January Peruvian Fatima Balmelli uploaded an image on TikTok featuring giant grapes that are almost as big as an orange, which her family cultivates on their farm located in Ica. The clip was viewed by millions and received an influx of messages from users looking to buy the grapes. Fatima does not have any experience in selling fruits, however she chose to take advantage of the opportunities which social media provided her.
Fatima’s family, headed by her father has been growing and exporting table wine for the past 20 years. Due to the growing demand, Fatima got involved using the Muscatel brand. Her initial plan was to distribute the grapes via delivery, but was forced to rethink her plan due to huge demand. The grapes were then sold in stores and wineries located in Punta Hermosa as well as Lima in Lima, and distributing as much as 800 kilograms within a single week.
She initially offered entire bunches (1 Kilo) but since they’re not easy to transport so she altered her price. Fatima decided to separate the grapes with her hands out of the cluster to ease transportation. The Premium Exotic and Premium Exotic varieties is admired by its taste, sweetness and its crunchy texture. The massive grape harvest will soon be over and exports are continuing to be able to maintain the highest quality standards. In spite of weather-related issues including rains, and land slides, Fatima remains committed to her business.
The video’s success has also drawn critics, with some saying that the grapes had been modified genetically, treated with pesticides or weren’t like the one in the film. Fatima has responded to the accusations with facts: “People have to understand that grapes do not come from mold. Every cluster is unique,” comments Fatima, she believes there’s still some ignorance regarding grapes “People only have knowledge of the seedless grapes and seeds; there are many other varieties, and every one comes with their own method to be taken care of.”
