Papaya production is facing difficulties across the entire industry in the present. “We’re having some issues with quality due to the weather conditions in Mexico and this is creating some fluctuations in the market,” says Anthony Serafino from Exp Group, LLC, noting that the bulk of the papaya that is available on the market comes from Mexico. “The fruits are becoming less plentiful, so we’re hoping that as time pass by, we’ll be able to see improvements in the quality.”
In the meantime the demand for papaya that is a staple in North America is mostly the Maradol kind. “The product has seen a rise popular with the public recently,” says Serafino. “The population demographics of Canada as well as the United States are also changing which is boosting to boost the growth. It’s a general awareness of this issue that’s evolving which is similar to what we witnessed in the case of Yuca some time ago and the growth it experienced.”
Pricing for the future
This affects pricing in general. “It is higher than normal at the moment and we anticipate that the price will remain elevated for a period of duration as we address the shortage of supply,” says Serafino. “We’re looking forward to the possibility that quantity will rise in the coming weeks, but in reality, we’re focusing on the quality.”
