Drewry’s World Container Index increased by 9.9%, reaching $1,661 per 40ft container in the week.
The composite index grew by 9.9%, reaching $1,661 per 40ft of container this week, and it has decreased in value by 22% when it is comparison to the same week last year.
The most recent Drewry WCI composite index of $1,661 per 40ft of container is currently 17% higher than the typical for 2019 (pre-pandemic) rate of $1,420.
The median composite index to date is $1,674/40ft of container. This is less than the 10 year average which was $2672 (which was increased due to the extraordinary 2020-22 Covid timeframe).
Rates for freight from Shanghai up to Rotterdam rose by 16%, reaching $1,667 per ft, which was then rates for Shanghai to Genoa increase 15 percent to $1,956 for a 40ft container. The rates on Shanghai from New York rose by 8 percent to reach $3,074 for a 40ft box.
Similar to that, the rates for Shanghai between Los Angeles, Rotterdam to Shanghai and Los Angeles to Shanghai increased by 6.6%, reaching $2,100 and 3%, to $466, and one percent to $774 per feu, respectively. The rate for Rotterdam between New York inched down by 22% to $1,480 for a 40ft and rates for New York to Rotterdam remained unchanged. Drewry expects rates for East-West spot to rise over the next few weeks because of the Red Sea/Suez circumstance.
