“For people who don’t already know, Sicily is the European zone where netted melons are first harvested, therefore it’s essential to consider the country of origin for produce throughout the supply chain, especially if we are to offer distributors an item that has the benefits of having the Italian production source.” Explains Vincenzo Di Pasquale from Donnalia which is a Sicilian high-end brand.
“I I am saying this since confusion is a common feature on the shelves of supermarkets, causing confusion for customers during the first week of Sicilian netted melon time of year. It happens due to the fact that produce from outside the country, e.g. from Senegal and Senegal, are also readily available in the same time frame. Donnalia provides a warranty that the consumer is sure to get food which is safe to eat and is of domestic origin.”
“The melons that are netted have been at its peak in the Licata region (Agrigento) located in Agrigento, the most prolific melon producing area in Italy. It was already harvesting after Easter and the organoleptic properties were very high immediately. Melons now taste even more delicious as they have the Brix at a minimum of 16 degrees.”
“The most well-known melons of these past years have been the ones with red feathers. A good grade ranges from 990 g up or 1.2 kg. In this case it is possible to say that our expectations are extremely impressive considering the outstanding results in the field. When temperatures rise and production increases, we expect both as well as consumption to rise. The prices for production are currently ranging between EUR1.50 to EUR2.30/kg.”
“Netted melons are now very crucial for us. They’re among the items that help us the biggest progress particularly when it comes in relation to the development of our Brand Identity. The prices are quite high currently, however they’ll likely begin to fall as more amounts are cultivated, but predictions remain optimistic. The moment is now to wait for the warmer temperatures to strike the northern part of Italy which will increase the consumption.”
