Nectarines, peaches, and apricots excellent quality in spite of the problems

“The peach, apricot and nectarrine season is now fully underway at Ecofarm. It’s a bit late as it has been in the past but the quality is high,” reports Sabina Donzella who is the quality director at the Sicilian PO and she adds that “the conditions of the last few months resulted in delays in the ripening process that then coincided with the highest growth of parasites, such as stink bugs, which is becoming difficult to manage.”

“After the first high price during May and June, they have stabilized between EUR0.70 to EUR0.50/kg as a result of the increasing quantities offered. The top grades earned best prices. So were the most appealing grades that is usually the norm.”

“The conditions have changed” and while it’s certain that agriculture is the initial victim and first to be affected by the tragic consequences however, it’s also the case that we need to be prepared to deal with the changes. This is why it’s not vital for national as well as international policymakers to assist farmers adopt integrated methods of controlling for weeds. It will also push this sector to more effective and innovative agronomic approaches. It must be done with a sustainability perspective both from a social, environmental and economic standpoint.”
