“Nearby nations are totally dependent upon Indian onions”

Despite the import of onions to India being subject to an extra duty added on, the there is very good, claims Sagar Tikyani, owner of Indian onion exporter Dilip Agro: “Indian onion exports have been affected by the 40% export tax on FOB, as imposed by the Indian government. But, demand from neighboring countries is quite high, which means that the trade isn’t as affected as the countries in close proximity depend upon Indian onion exports.”

This added duty on exports means that the cost of Indian onions are greater than other varieties, such as Pakistani onions. According to Tikyani they say that the Indian onions are still a standout on the market. “The current prices range from 550 to 560 US dollars FOB. This isn’t competitive with other nations like Pakistan and India, who are selling the onions for around 300 to 320 USD FOB. It is good news that Indian onions are of a distinctive quality that is incomparable to the other market that we have.”

According to Tikyani the overall onion harvest is predicted to be a little lower than usual this year: “When looking at the numbers, this year’s reports suggest 10% to 15% percentage drop in production is anticipated. It will be fascinating to know the future in the coming weeks, as we near the conclusion of the season for pink varieties which is expected to end in October. Regarding the quality of our products, we are providing top quality products to our international clients. It’s arriving at its destination port well-maintained exactly as we expected.”

“We’re looking to fill 250 containers in the coming year. That’s attainable at the moment. But it’s too early to know for certain, since we’ve got an entire year to go. The onions we’re shipping currently to countries such as Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates. Our company will be aiming to ship more onions to Gulf countries, such as Saudi Arabia and Oman. We are looking forward to another great year,” Tikyani concludes.
