Nashik farmers are protesting against onion export duty, as prices plummet

Within Maharashtra’s Nashik district in India there was a demonstration by farmers in Lasalgaon’s market for wholesale goods against the export tax of 20% on onions. They halted trading for a period of two hours. Bharat Dighole, the president of the Maharashtra State Onion Growers Association has highlighted the ongoing protests in support of removing the duty. He said, “Summer crop is up to harvest, and wholesale prices are already dropping. If duty isn’t taken away soon, there will result in a bloodbath of cost.”

The ban on exports was put in place because of an unseasonably low crop. However, although the ban was removed at the end of 2024, an import duty remains. The issue has had an impact on onion exports to the markets of markets in the Middle East, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Narendra Wadhavane who is the director of the market in Lasalgaon said, “Some of the protesters have climbed up on the tank to drink water, but were removed by the police. Trade resumed later on.”

MLA Dilip Bankar raised the subject at the Legislative Assembly, and minister Jaykumar Rawal promising to address the issue with the central government.
