Mekong Delta prepares for severe water shortages and an increased salinity of the river

The Mekong Delta region is working to shield millions of hectares of crop land from the effects of drought and saltwater intrusion. Tran Ba Hoang who is the director of the Southern Institute of Water Resources Research during a symposium held in Can Tho City on September 14 that total rainfall in the Delta this year is predicted to be in the range of 1,350 mm and that’s 13percent lower than what is typical. It was reported by the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Station said that the flow during the dry season in the areas upstream of the Mekong will be around 20 to 25% lower than average.

Within Hau Giang Province, more than 18,500 ha of orchards will be affected by the saltwater infiltration into the rivers. According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development nearly all residents are preparing to hold water both for irrigation as well as household use and have dug canals that lead the water of streams into their farms following having learned from the droughts of 2016, and the year 2020.
