MD2 pineapple farming model yields first harvest in Quang Ngai province

In Quang Ngai province located in central of Vietnam A pilot farm initiative focusing on the cultivation of MD2 pineapples is now resulting with the first harvest. It was established to boost the status of the local farmer and the indigenous communities, the program is allocated 500 sq.m space in Son Tay District’s Nuoc Tang Village for this reason. The project aims to move from the traditional low-yielding yielding crops to the higher-value MD2 pineapple varieties.

The owner of the farm, Dinh Van Mong, has reported an increase of 3.5 tonnes on the farm. The farmer praised the MD2 pineapple’s suitability to the soil and climatic conditions. He also highlighted its thin skin, juicier, as well as a more sweet flavor than regular pineapples. Its value on the market can range from VND12,000 to 5,000 (US$0.46-0.58) for a kilogram and the expectation is to earn approximately VND5.5 millions (US$214.5) for each harvest cycle.

Dinh Truong Gong, vice-chairman of the province’s People’s Committee, remarked on the role of MD2 in increasing the income of farmers and promoting the development of economics. The efforts are in progress in the Son Tay District to promote MD2 pineapple production through the most efficient methods of farming, innovation in education, and making contacts with purchasers.
