Lime exports to Brazil have decreased because of the ongoing rain, as well as less EU demand

The current rains in Brazil is slowing the lime exports. Meanwhile, demand has dropped in important European markets. In addition, the rain has brought more severe burden of disease, says Wellington Carvalho, sales manager for Don Vicente, the exporter. Don Vicente. “We mostly deal using limes, and now have more available limes within Sao Paulo, due to the flooding that occurred at the end of the year. However, it caused more cases of ailments including oleocellosis as well as skin damages.”

Because of the vastness of Brazil it is not possible for all areas to get rain at the same at the same time. However, rain is expected to be on the direction in northeastern Brazil, says Carvalho. “In the northeast region, rain amounts are less in the present, however rain is expected in over the next few days, so this scenario could alter for the month of March.”

According to him, their primary market is Europe that they service directly. “The principal market we cater to in direct contact is Europe. There are also partners with partners in Canada as well as South Africa. We ship our products to Holland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden and many other countries. Prices on the European market vary from around 8-7 Euro for large sizes and between 6 to 7 euros for small sizes.”

The cooler months typically signal an era of less Brazilian lime demand in Europe. “Due to winter’s colder temperatures there is less demand, so it is possible that we will see a small decline in the prices in March, however for the month of March, we anticipate things to shift with better temperature,” says Carvalho.

First time ginger exports

Don Vicente began with the first ginger exports they made last year, says Carvalho in response to the increasing demand from around the world. The company hopes to boost exports this year. “We had a small campaign last year. While last year was slow, we did get the best results, and we’re planning to place bets again in the coming year, and to be more bold,” concludes Carvalho.
