Kurdistan Region successfully exports 600 tonnes of potato products to Qamishlo and Hasakah

It is reported that the Kurdistan Region of Iraq has succeeded in exporting 600 tons of potatoes Qamishlo as well as Hasakah located in Western Kurdistan. The sale was completed on the 19th of August, 2024 was supported through the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in order to help local farmers, as said by Bashar Moshir, the CEO of K.H. Potato Investment and Export Company. The potatoes were moved from Duhok via the Pishkhabur gate with 25 trucks. This highlights the need in KRG potato in Syria as well as Western Kurdistan.

This latest export came after an even larger deal that took place in the month of July 2024. 55,000 tonnes were shipped towards the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in addition to last year’s exports that totaled 13,000 tons for the UAE as well as Saudi Arabia. According to projections, exports may surpass 25,000 tonnes to Gulf nations this year the production of Kurdistan’s region’s potatoes is growing rapidly, being at more than 800,000 tonnes per year. The Nawkuri plain, located in the Bardarash district Duhok province is the main contributor to the region’s production, with over 300,000 tonnes of potatoes being produced every year.

The commitment of the region to agriculture improvement is evident through its manufacturing of about 30 varieties of potatoes, which are valued for their superiority throughout the Middle East.
