Korean grapes are gaining distribution throughout America. U.S. This year, Love April will be entering its fourth year of bringing the Korean grapes, and it is expanding the program. It is currently distributing the grapes across California however, it also includes Washington, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, and New York and also into Canadian markets like Vancouver in Vancouver and Toronto.
The grapes come from the Shine Muscat variety-a large, extremely sweet and tasty grape with a nutty crunch like that of the Autumn Crisp variety of grapes currently available. “They are similar to Autumn Crisp however, they’re larger and more sweet. Minimum Brix is 17, but it can be up to 24” claims Love the April issue of Elena Kong.
The grapes are at present being transported from Korea have been receiving an increase in price (last year’s price was increased to $35 per 600g) partially due to the high prices for air freight. They could shift to water-based imports prior to the Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Festival in September 17.
Air, followed by water and shipping
The primary variety of grape is grown in the greenhouses of Korea and being brought in the U.S. into September. Following that, production will shift to the outdoor-grown variety. Grapes are imported to the U.S. until late winter-early the spring.
“This is a highly sought-after item in Korean, Chinese, and Asian markets. Since the first time we imported it in the past four years and have been expanding the market and expanding it to other markets outside of Asia,” Kong says. Kong explaining it’s social media as an important method used to educate U.S. consumers about the product. Kong also says that Shine Muscat is typically consumed for special occasions, in contrast to the regular snacking and eating the grapes are available in the marketplace. “The distinctive flavor and the texture from Shine Muscat grapes are incomparable with any other variety of grape and we’d like to see there will be more people who appreciate these grapes. It is particularly important to have quality when increasing the demand for Shine Muscat.”
