Kashmir Fruit growers report positive results from their Apple harvest

In Srinagar in Srinagar, the farmers of fruit have seen a rebound in profits, especially using traditional varieties of apple after a time of loss due to issues with cold storage. Market demand for traditional apple varieties has exceeded those of previous years and has assisted growers in overcoming recent financial losses. Pulwama district’s Sameer Ahmad emphasized the significant growth in the number of visits to orchards by businesses that deal in fruit and the prices for their fruit more than double when compared with previous year. Sorts like Kulu as well as Delicious are widely distributed and the continued demand could end up leading to a major recovery in the sector, which was battling numerous issues during the last few times.

Government efforts to ensure smooth shipping of apple products are being praised by apple producers, who are optimistic regarding the continued growth in demand. In spite of a decline in the production of apples this year however, current demand is resulting in favorable prices. This sector, which is vital for the economic development of Kashmir, depends in large part on the production of apples producing an average of around 20 lakh metric tons. The impact on the economy on the apple industry within the region is significant and supports half of the Kashmir inhabitants whether directly or indirectly as per the latest J&K economic study.
