The Israeli Ministry of Agriculture allowed the potato sowing to commence on Wednesday, in the Lev HaNegev fields, near Kibbutz Urim. It is located approximately 25 km away from the Grenze with Gaza.
The Ministry of Agriculture notes that in the moment there isn’t any agricultural activities at a distance between 7 and 7 kilometers from the frontier with Gaza. Within the region around Gaza (Eshkol, Shaar Hanegev, Negev fields and the Ashkelon coast) There are a total of 6 hectares of fields for potatoes from the 16,000 hectares that are which are used for the cultivation of potatoes throughout the entire country. It is roughly 40 percent of land that is used for growing potatoes within Israel are within the area around Gaza.
Every year, around 490,000 tons of potato are harvested in Israel. About 225,000 tonnes are intended for Israeli consumers, 73,000 tons are utilized for industrial use as raw materials approximately 35,000 tons serve as seeds for potatoes to be used in the following crop, and around 155,000 tons are shipped abroad.
