The season of citrus begins in Iran when the harvest begins of the tangerines. Amirhossein Azizi, from exporter Bezhit presents the seasons new products.
Amirhossein added, “Iranian tangerines are already in the harvest and for sale. The oranges are expected to be available in the next 2 months. This year’s quality is exceptional, and comes with large size and great flavor. It’s crucial to understand that the flavor and taste of Iranian citrus is quite different in comparison to Egypt or Spain The citrus we have here has an improved BRIX as well as a distinctive flavor.”
“There is a current an increasing demand for Iranian Tangerines coming from Russia, Armenia, Central Asian countries and Iraq” states the company that exports. The sizes between 200 and 500 grams are a high demande from the vast majority of Asian clients, whereas the Iraqi market as well as other neighbouring nations are looking for smaller sizes of less than 200 grams. There is a new market demand this year, as we’ve invested many hours in introducing new markets especially within Europe We’re happy to have our efforts recognized. In the coming months, we’ll be making sure that we get the best shipping costs.”
The challenge is still to get Iranian citrus to get into Europe Amirhossein admits this. “Despite extremely high-quality production, very little of Iranian citrus make it to Europe. Only a handful of exporters are able to ship their products to Europe since it’s hard to get the required certificates due to sanctions against Iran. The process of getting certifications is expensive and lengthy.”
Iranian citrus prices therefore remain steady, and this season beginning at same price as in the previous season, as per the exporter.
