The Indian federal government has lowered price of subsidised tomatoes so that consumers can save the high prices of retail. Government is offering tomatoes for a price that is subsidised at the equivalent of Rs.80 per kg in Delhi NCR and other cities via the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India as well as the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India.
The average price for retail in India for tomatoes has been set at close to 120 kg however, the staple kitchen ingredient can be sold at $245 for a kilogram at certain locations. In Delhi it has gone down to around Rs 120 for kilogram. It is reported that the Department of Consumer Affairs has ordered NCCF as well as NAFED to offer tomatoes for sale at a retail prices of 70 rupees per kilogram starting the 20th of July the 2023 due to the trend of declining prices for tomatoes.
