Indian agencies buy 290,000 tons of onions

The National Agricultural Co-operative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (Nafed) as well as the National Cooperative Consumers’ Federation of India Ltd (NCCF) have purchased 290,000 tons onions to date. The purchasing process for both central agencies is scheduled to conclude in the next few weeks.

The federal government has established the goal of purchasing 300,000 tonnes of onion harvest for this year via Nafed as well as NCCF. The previous year, the government acquired held a buffer of onions worth 250,000 tonnes through Nafed. In this year’s election the government of India also appoints NCCF to manage procurement.

The majority of total purchases have been made through both agencies till now. In that time, the majority of the onions were purchased from Nashik district by itself, while the rest of them have been sourced from different areas that grow onions, such as Ahmednagar, Pune and Aurangabad. Nafed officials have thus far sourced around 140,000 tonnes of onion from the onion-growing regions of Maharashtra.
