India The exports of onion rose 64% during FY23

Exports of onion soared 64 percent in volume and reached a record-setting six-year peak at 2.53 millions tons between 2022 and 23 due to strong demand from overseas as well as increased supplies. Value-wise onions shipments increased 22 percent at $561 million compared to last year’s total of $561 million. The increase in shipments was due to higher purchase of large purchasers like Bangladesh, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka.

Ajit Shah, president of the Horticulture Produce Exporters Association said that the prospects of exports for this year are looking good. But, because of the rain that was not seasonally forecast the cargo is suffering a lot of damage on the goods. “Onion is readily available however, the high-quality products are less. The market at present is down due to the greater availability of low quality as well as the damage caused by the rain on the market. What percentage of the produce is able to be sold, we’ll need to see.” Shah said.

Between 2022 and the year 2022, Bangladesh was the top purchaser of Indian onions, with more than 670,000 tonnes, then following by United Arab Emirates at 403,000 tons, Malaysia at 393,000 tons and Sri Lanka at over 270,000 tons.
