Filipino banana farmer turns to the lucrative EU market

Yesterday it was reported that The Filipino Department of Trade and Industry said that a firm indicated its intention to expand exports of bananas to Europe. Villa Socorro, a social business based out of Pagsanjan, Laguna, signified the interest of its customers as its exports of bananas have drawn customers who are from European Union.

“Villa Socorro’s imports into Europe have been at 5 %, and have clients from Switzerland, Norway and EU state member the Netherlands,” it said. “The company is looking to expand its trade with Europe particularly with EU members, which they believe are one of the top destinations for healthful organic foods made of the tropical fruit.”

The company therefore acquired its Registered Exporter System, a self-certification method whereby the place of origin of the goods is stated by the economic operator themselves, through so-called declarations regarding sources. According to the Department of Trade and Industry declared: “To be entitled to declare a declaration of the origin, an economic entity is required to be registered on databases by competent authorities. An economic company then is”a registered exporter”.”

In addition, the business has created an additional brand, Farmony that will market its goods in the EU. Villa Socorro is known to aid small-scale banana farmers that they consider to be their “partners” with the purchase of the entire amount of their fruit.
